Location

The city of Batumi is situated on the Black Sea coast in the southwestern part of the country. The city is bustling with life, the streets overflowing with restaurants with deli- cious food and wine, cosy cafes with strong, tasty coffee and viewpoints such as the Alphabetic Tower, which offers views of the rooftops of the city centre, the mountains, and the sea.

Alittle south of Batumi is the Roman fort of Apsaros (Gonio, Khelvachauri Municipality). The first garrison appeared here in the 60s of the 1st century AD. The fort was most intensively used in the time of Trajan and during the reign of Hadrian. Today, the biggest tourist attraction is the well-preserved defensive walls from the Late Roman and Byzantine periods.
