Post-congress tour

Dates: 15-16 September 2024

General info:

This trip will be organized on the territory of Turkey. Please check the visa requirements for your citizenship!

Booking must be done before end of 01.07.2024. We’ll have the application form for tours ready for you in the first week of April. Payment procedure will be given in the Third Circular.

Participants should carry a valid passport during the entire trip.

The trip requires some physical fitness, associated with the need to walk sections during hikes, climb stairs, ramps, and takes place in terrain with varied topography. Even when using buses to visit some sites during the trip, there is often a need for walking uphill

 

Programme

Day 1

 

Tour starts at Batumi University early in the morning.

 

Departure to the Sarpi and crossing the Georgian-Turkish border. The first stop is Rize.
 

Rize visit – Byzantine fortress was built at the same time as Petra Jus- tiniana. The well-preserved fortification walls are noteworthy. From the fortifications, you can also enjoy a panoramic view of the modern city.

Coffee break

Trabzon visit – Trebizond was Greek colony, headquarters of the Roman Pontic fleet, an important fortress on the borderlands of the Roman Empire destroyed during the invasion of the Boranians, and finally the capital of the Byzantine Empire of Trebizond. Alhough the turbulent history was not conducive to the survival of ancient monu- ments, the remains of massive defensive walls, which can be found in various parts of the old city, go back to Pre-Roman and Roman times.

Lunch break

Departure and visit Sumela Monastery – Sumela is a unique place, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is amazing Byzan- tine monastery largely carved into the rocks. Outside and in- side the caves, magnificent wall paintings on sacred themes have been preserved. Equally unique are the views that accompany a trip to this place.

Departure to Trabzon and check in at the hotel.

Dinner at the hotel.

 

Day 2

 

Early breakfast and departure to Satala.

Coffee and tea break at Gümüşhane

 

Satala – The site is known primarily as the headquarters of Legio quindecima Apollinaris. It was the legionary fortress closest to the Roman defence system on the coast of Colchis. Today, part of the site of the former legionary fort is occupied by a Turkish village. A number of architectural relics visible on the surface (!) have been preserved both intra muros and around the fortification. Many details and fragments of inscriptions carved in stone can be found in the walls of contemporary houses and farm buildings.

 

Lunch break

 

Departure to Trabzon and Batumi (You can select your departure airport, arrival to Trabzon between 18:00-19:00, arrival to Ba- tumi between 20:00-22:00).

 

Coffee and tea break on the way

 

Arrival to the hotel at Batumi and end of the tour.

This tour will start at Batumi and ends in Batumi. You can also be dropped off at Trabzon airport if you are using local flight connections. It is your own responsibility to arrive on time for departure of the bus. The bus will not wait for the people that are late.
